The golf expert is looking for more big things from Oosthuizen this week after his performance at the Phoenix Open. The South African had been off for almost three months but showed little sign of rust in shooting three rounds in the 60’s to tie for 14th. He has two top-15 finishes in three full events, and he leads the tour in greens in regulation (78.2 percent). All that comes on the heels of his stellar play last season, when the 39-year-old finished in the top 25 in 14 of his 21 tournaments, Gates likes the veteran’s chances to contend this week at PGA National.
On the other hand, Gates is not sold on Berger and is fading him this week. The 28-year-old had a back injury that forced him out of the tournament at Pebble Beach then missed the cut in Phoenix. He said he is healthy and ready to play in Palm Beach Gardens, but his swing might need to be reset. He is 158th on tour in strokes gained putting this season and 78th in strokes gained around the green. Combined with his 172nd-place standing in driving distance, he hasn’t been posting impressive numbers. Berger has shot in the 70’s in four of his last five rounds.
