Jon Scheyer’s Recent NIL Comments Should Terrify Other Programs
When a sports staff makes a important change, there are often two prospects. Let’s seem at the Duke Blue Devils men’s basketball staff as an instance of that. Mike Krzyzewski has, of system, handed control of the plan to Jon Scheyer. The rookie head coach could wilt under the force, or he could assist information NCAA blue-blood into a new era.
Although we’ll have to wait around to see how things perform out on the court docket, Scheyer’s reviews about NCAA name, graphic, and likeness (NIL) rules could stand for a stage toward modernity. Whether that is encouraging or terrifying will count on your rooting choices.

As lovers, we believe of faculty coaches putting in get the job done for the duration of procedures and online games. Operating a major-time basketball program, having said that, needs loads of paperwork and administration. Lately, the NCAA’s ambiguous NIL policy has only produced points trickier.
Jon Scheyer, nevertheless, isn’t worried about the modifying collegiate landscape. If everything, he knows that there is no time to bury his head in the sand and want for anything various.
“Look, I came by Duke about 15 decades back, which is really latest, and it is night time and working day from what it’s like for our guys now with alternatives they have as opposed to what I experienced,” the new head mentor told David Kaplan of NBC Sporting activities Chicago. “It would be truly simple to say, ‘I want it was that way’ or ‘Can we go again to when it was more simple’ or whatever it may be. But, all in all, if it is finished suitable, this is much better. And you have to be thoughtful, and we have to make confident we’re nonetheless, you know, valuing the correct things, but our college students and our university student-athletes deserve the possibility to make their identify, to make cash off name, graphic, and likeness. They ought to have to have their decision [of] exactly where they want to be.”
Scheyer does far more than comprehend that reality, however. Alternatively, he sees it as a chance to stand out.
“And so, for us, we glance at it as an prospect,” he ongoing. “And I’m not going to converse for what other coaches come to feel or what they are performing, but I can tell you that’s how we’re approaching it. And we’re seriously enthusiastic about this subsequent chapter and new era of university basketball.”
NIL dollars could make Duke an even much better power on the recruiting landscape
In fairness to Scheyer, his quotes even now go away some items unanswered. What are the “right things” that must be valued, for instance? Will Duke do everything certain to embrace the “opportunities” of present day college basketball?
Though we’ll have to wait around and see about the details, Scheyer’s frame of mind does to some degree discuss for alone. When Mentor K spoke out in aid of NIL in 2019 (h/t CBS Sports activities), he ordinarily approached issues from a massive-picture, all-NCAA standpoint. His alternative, nonetheless, is (relatively ambiguously) talking about what it means for Duke.
Despite the fact that it admittedly usually takes a little bit of assumption, the word “opportunity” suggests that the Blue Devils know the match and are prepared to enjoy it. It is effortless to imagine the recruiting pitch: “If you want to show your NBA prospective and start off earning revenue ASAP, why wouldn’t you want to appear to Duke?”
To make factors even scarier for the relaxation of the ACC, take into account two other realities. Initially, Duke has not long ago been on a recruiting sizzling streak. They landed the prime-rated 2022 class and by now have two leading-ten commitments from the course of 2023. That is took place in the infancy of Scheyer’s reign if his vision, the two on and off the court, proves successful, his stock will only climb.
Next, Scheyer added Jai Lucas to his staff members. The assistant coach recognized himself as a powerful recruiter at Kentucky and will now be performing his aspect to deliver players to Durham. All over again, he’s a youthful coach with a burgeoning popularity if matters go properly, he’ll only make Duke extra and a lot more desirable.
Once more, that depends on some conjecture and hypotheticals. Possibly I’m misinterpreting Scheyer’s estimate. Perhaps he’ll tumble flat on his experience in 2022, thus damaging Duke’s recruiting standing. If all the things falls into spot, while, it’s uncomplicated to see things snowballing.
The Blue Devils are bringing in a potent recruiting class this fall, and let us suppose that Scheyer rides it to a productive season. That improves the youthful coach’s stature and gives Lucas a much better pitch it also further’s Duke’s industrial existence, this means foreseeable future players can command much more NIL cash from brand names. In principle, that helps the software deliver in the following spherical of gifted players, who thrive on the court and go on the cycle.
If you are a Duke enthusiast, which is a aspiration arrive legitimate. Normally, it appears like a nightmare situation.
