Make Your Golf Cart Lighter and Faster

Espnmyid

The average speed of the standard golf cart goes a measly (and maximum) 15 mph. So getting from one hole to the next can be a very slow process. But, there are a few ways that you can make your cart lighter and so also faster. Many companies sell different items to help you with this task.

The first step is to try to get rid of any excess weight; anything from extra cup holders to fancy, unnecessary rims on the wheels.

A very simple but often overlooked improvement is to make sure that the bottom of the cart is clean from debris. Mud and other caked-on remains will greatly slow down the cart.

You could also add larger tires. The larger the tire, the larger the revolution and so the faster the speed of the cart. In addition, the thicker tires will have more traction to handle the faster speed more effectively (and keep you safe). You can get tires at any golf cart store or even online.

Also make sure that your tires are properly inflated. Poor inflation, just like regular vehicles, reduces its speed.

If you install a higher RPM high-speed electric motor, it will also help the cart go a bit faster on the course.

You could also either adjust or completely remove the governor. The governor limits the maximum speed the golf cart can reach. These are installed in most carts for safety.

If you replace the existing gear sets with one that has a lower ratio, this will also improve the overall speed of the cart. Standard gear setting on a cart is usually 12.5:1 yielding a top speed of 14 to 15 miles per hour. But an 8:1 gear set will increase the speed to about 20 miles per hour.

If you have an electric golf cart, making it faster involves some different techniques and can prove to be a bit more difficult.

To increase the speed on your electric cart, you’ll want to get a new battery- one that will maximize the motor’s output. Most electric golf carts are already made to work with a wide range of batteries, so finding one that will maximize the output shouldn’t be a problem.

You can also get a new electric engine if you’re unable to get a new battery. This may be the only way to boost the speed if you realize that you are already using the highest possible voltage.

Like the traditional golf carts, you can also upgrade the gear system on the electric carts to make them go faster. Electric cars typically have an 8:1 gear ratio. By switching it to a 12:1, you’ll be increasing the speed. However, keep in mind that as you improve the cart’s speed, you may comprise its ability to tow heavy items.

Many customized vehicles can do all this for you, though for a much heftier price. But with a little know-how and time, you can get your golf cart speeding (safely of course) from green to green.
